Primary Care Nurse for Fromeside Medium/Low Secure Estate

Opportunities have opened up to join Hanham Health’s expanding secure environments team as a band 5/6 primary care nurse at Fromeside Medium & Low Secure Estate in Bristol. The estate comprises of Fromeside Unit, an 80 bed medium secure service caring for people with a mental illness and/or personality disorder who also have a criminal history or have risks and behaviours that mean they cannot be treated in mainstream mental health services and Wickham unit, a low secure service with 31 rehabilitation-focused beds in three wards, each meeting the specific needs of vulnerable men with ongoing mental health issues who are at different stages of recovery and with different levels of independence.

Working alongside a range of healthcare professionals, including Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust mental health practitioners and psychiatrists and Hanham Health GPs, the primary care nurse will coordinate and deliver physical healthcare to the 111 service users resident at the facility. Duties include reception and departure medicals, health education and promotion, phlebotomy, immunisations/vaccinations, long-term condition management, triage, assessment and treatment of trauma/minor injuries, contributing to care plans and liaising with a range of health professionals.

Good communication, IT and medical examination skills, as well as flexibility of approach and the ability to work unsupervised, are essential. Previous experience of delivering healthcare within secure environments is desirable, although not a pre-requisite for this position. Training, development and clinical supervision will be provided to support the successful candidate in delivering a full range of physical health services competently and independently; this will include regular sessions at one of our community GP surgeries, alongside our practice nursing team.

Please note that we are recruiting to fill a full-time position and will consider both full-time applicants and part-time job shares.

Candidates shortlisted for interview will be offered the opportunity to visit the unit and put forward any questions. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Detailed information on this position can be found in the attached job description and person specification.

Applications should be made in the form of a CV and cover letter emailed to Viki Lamb, Strategic Manager for Secure Environments –
